March is National Nutrition Month so let’s talk about your diet. When you hear the word diet do you think of a restricting, short-term diet that focuses on weight loss?
Unfortunately, that is usually what comes to mind.
When we use the word diet we are referring to a person’s overall consumption of food and drinks and we want to focus more on a long-term, healthy diet.
According to an article in the Permanente Journal, healthy eating may be best achieved with a plant-based diet, which is defined as a regimen that encourages whole, plant-based foods and discourages meats, dairy products, and eggs as well as all refined and processed foods.1 The article goes on to describe that research shows that plant-based diets are generally cheaper and may lower body mass index, blood pressure, HbA1C, and cholesterol levels.
This month we will be providing tips on the benefits of a plant-based diet and ideas of how you can add more plant-based items to your diet.
