Recommended Vaccines for Older Adults

Immunizations for Seniors

While many people think of vaccines to help children develop well-rounded and effective immune systems, they can also help protect adults from preventable diseases—especially older adults. In light of National Immunization Awareness Month, the health experts at Ridgecrest Regional Hospital are here to share which vaccines can help support seniors' immune health.

Necessary Vaccines for Elderly Adults

Although leading an active lifestyle and eating a nutrient-dense diet are important parts of staying happy and healthy as you age, getting vaccinated is also important. Vaccines help your immune system recognize illness-causing germs and bacteria, allowing them to develop the necessary antibodies to prevent serious illness.

As you get older, you are at an increased risk of developing certain health issues, making the list of vaccines for seniors different than it would be for younger adults or even children. The following vaccines are recommended for seniors:

  • Shingles vaccine.
  • Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23).
  • Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13).

Routine Vaccines that Prevent Infection

While you only need to get the aforementioned vaccines once, it is recommended that older adults get the following immunizations regularly:

  • Get the seasonal influenza (flu) vaccine once annually.
  • Get a tetanus shot (Td or Tdap) every 10 years.

Keep in mind that people living with certain chronic health conditions should not get certain vaccines. If you’re not sure if you’re up-to-date on your immunizations or which vaccines may be right for you, be sure to reach out to your primary care provider.
