Ultrasound is a noninvasive imaging test that shows structures inside your
body using high-intensity sound waves. Healthcare providers use ultrasound exams for several purposes, including
during pregnancy, for diagnosing conditions and for image guidance during
certain procedures.
Pregnancy Ultrasound: Used during pregnancy to confirm pregnancy, estimate your due date, and
monitor your baby's growth and development.
Diagnostic Ultrasound: Uses sound waves to create images of organs, tissues, and blood vessels
to help diagnose and monitor a variety of medical conditions.
Ultrasound-Guided Procedures: Provides real-time imaging to help guide needles and other instruments
during procedures such as biopsies, fluid drainage, and nerve blocks for
greater accuracy.
How Ultrasound Works
Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of structures
inside the body. During the exam, a trained technologist applies a small
amount of gel to the skin and moves a handheld device called a transducer
over the area being examined.
The transducer sends sound waves into the body, which bounce off organs
and tissues and return to the device. A computer then converts these sound
waves into real-time images, allowing your provider to evaluate the area
being examined.
Women's Imaging Ultrasound Services
Women's imaging ultrasounds provide detailed images to support breast and
reproductive health at every stage of life.
Obstetric (OB) Ultrasound: Monitors your baby's growth and development throughout pregnancy, confirms
pregnancy, estimates your due date, and evaluates fetal health.
Gynecologic (GYN) Ultrasound: Examines the uterus, ovaries, and other pelvic organs to help diagnose
conditions such as pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, ovarian cysts, fibroids,
and other gynecologic concerns.
Breast Ultrasound: Evaluates breast tissue and helps investigate lumps, areas of concern
found during a mammogram or physical exam, and other breast symptoms.
It may also be used to guide certain breast procedures.
