When Should I Start Seeing a Gynecologist?

It is recommended that women start seeing a gynecologist at the onset of puberty or when they become sexually active. You should see your gynecologist once a year so they can check your vaginal health and screen for cancer and other diseases.

The following screenings can be performed by your gynecologist:

  • General exams to assess overall vaginal and reproductive health
  • STD screenings
  • Pelvic exams for screening uterine and ovarian cancers
  • Breast exams to screen for breast cancer
  • Pap smears to screen for cervical cancer

You should receive a general and breast exams every year, but you can usually wait one to three years between pelvic exams and Pap smears. Recommended screening schedules vary depending on your age and risk factors, so be sure to discuss an appropriate routine with your gynecologist.
